Explore grants provide libraries with funding for activities that are foundational steps in improving services, collections, and programs. Options are identified based on current needs affecting Massachusetts libraries and their communities. These needs must align with the agency's LSTA long range plan.
This opportunity provides libraries with funds to purchase materials for English language learning for speakers of other languages and U.S. citizenship. Eligible materials include books, audiobooks, videos, magazines, e-books, e-audiobooks, online training, and databases. Materials must be circulating and cannot be given away. Costs of subscription services must be pro-rated to the grant period.
This opportunity provides libraries funds to support preservation planning goals and the identification of digital collections stewardship. Preservation assessment types include physical preservation assessments, digital curation readiness assessments, and fine and decorative art and object condition reports. Awarded libraries will contract with an MBLC-approved preservation consultant able to conduct one or more site visit(s), assess the overall state of the facility, condition(s), and/or object(s), identify areas of concern and potential improvements, and complete the assessment process via delivery of a formal Preservation Assessment report. The entirety of the award must be paid to the selected preservation consultant.
Types of eligible assessments:
The Preservation Assessment report will identify short-, near- and long-term preservation priorities and recommended actions specific to the library, spaces, collections, and/or items being assessed.

ESOL/Citizenship Corner: $4,000
Preservation Assessment: $7,500
Awarded amount must be fully spent by the end of the project period. This is not a reimbursement grant and no funds can be returned.
